Špindlerův Mlýn, sporting activities in the surrounding areas
Špindlerův Mlýn is one of the most important ski centres, not only in the Krkonoše Mountains, but also in the whole of the Czech Republic. It is situated at a height above sea level of 715 - 1 310 m on the confluence of the Labe and Dolský potok. The whole town lies within the territory of the Krkonoše National Park. The town spreads out over an area of 7 692 ha (approx. 77 km2) and is made up of four basic parts: Přední Labská, Labská, Bedřichov and Svatý Petr. There are approximately 1 300 permanent inhabitants there and this number increases to as much as 15 000 due to tourists in the high season.
Špindlerův Mlýn is the ideal starting point for a wide range of hiking routes and cycle paths. The first snow can already start to appear on the ridges of the Krkonoše Mountains at the end of October. Optimum snow conditions for all winter sports last from December until the end of April. The so-called "Svatý Petr" and "Medvědín" sporting centres are two of the most popular in the Czech Republic. All fans of downhill skiing from beginners to the most demanding of skiers and snowboarders will find something to suit them here. Both two centres have artificial snow facilities if there is any fluctuation in the weather. Špindlerův Mlýn and its surrounding areas are ideal for cross-country skiers with many prepared cross-country runs for them. However, apart from possibilities for skiing and hiking, Špindlerův Mlýn also offers a wide range of other sporting activities.
Anybody who takes a liking to like it here, will be a friend of the region for life.
